I think it’s interesting that hardly anyone has brought up the affordability aspect. Good financial aid and chance of acceptance tend to be inversely proportional. Why call it a safety if you get accepted but can’t afford to attend?
D applied to 3 safeties in terms of chance of admission, but 2 of them have poor FinAid prospects. The third is a last ditch safety, in that it does not match most of what she is looking for in a college, but at least she knows for sure she can get accepted and afford to go there.
She applied to 4 matches with pretty good prospects of sufficient FinAid.
She applied to 2 reaches, with fair to good chances of sufficient FinAid.
So far she is accepted to the 3 safeties. One is affordable,one is not without a higher burden of debt than we desire, and one we don’t know the FinAid award yet.

@username9279 When you need a lot of FinAid, 9 or 10 is a reasonable number of college applications to increase your chance of both admission and sufficient FinAid.
