How many credits Freshman Year?

Is the norm for freshman to take 4 or 5 classes, not counting the 1 credit Univ First Year Experience class? I know that students can take up to 17 credits per semester for the standard tuition and that some classes with labs are 4 vs 3 credits. Just trying to get a sense for the typical course load.

Obviously it depends on a student’s major. If they have to take two 4 credit courses then they usually would probably take two 3 credit courses and the one credit FYE for a total of 15 credits. If all the courses are 3 credit courses most students would probably take 5 courses plus the FYI course for an total of 16 credits. Our D was a nursing major and her first semester she took three 4 credit courses (biology, chemistry, and intermediate Spanish) and she took one 3 credit course (psychology) and the one credit nursing FYE course for a total of 16 credits. Possibly some students might be advised to start with just four 3 credit courses along with the one credit FYE course for a total of just 13 credits (but this might put them in a jam in subsequent semesters). If a student has to take just one four credit course I believe it is a tossup but probably most students would take three 3 credits courses plus the one credit FYE for a total of 14 credits. If you are a glutton for punishment and have to take one 4 credit course you could take four 3 credit and the one credit FYE for a total of 17 credits. While this latter approach is certainly done by some students I suspect most advisors would be hesitant to recommend this course load the first semester of college. This should all be addressed at NSO. Good luck.

My first semester I had 15 credits, but then in the second I signed up for 17 credits. I’m also taking 17 credits this fall. It all depends on how many credits you get per class. Labs have notoriously proven to make scheduling difficult -.-
