How many credits do each semester course worth?

And how many classes are freshmans recommended to take on their first and second semester?

In the college, the recomended amount is 4.5 (which is 4 classes and a lab, but most freshman just take 4 classes without a lab, which is the norm).

One course is one credit, except for labs and similar things (residential programs that offer credits only offer .5 c.u. a semester)

That’s about right.

Most College majors are set up such that you only need to take four classes per semester in order to graduate in eight semesters. That makes it very easy to double major!

It’s a little frustrating that language courses that meet 5 hours a week count the same as seminars that meet 3 hours a week, but meh. Also if you ever take a hard science lab course, it’s something crazy like 13 or 14 hours a week for 1.5 c.u.!

Freshmen who are taking humanities/social science courses usually take 4 courses first semester; those in hard sciences usually take 4.5; Wharton, Engineering and Nursing are all usually 5 I believe.

Freshmen in the College have a max of 4.5 courses automatically set, and if you want to take more than that, you need to talk to your adviser.

What abt dual degrees? How many courses there?

To complete a dual degree, you need to finish the degree requirements in both schools. The most common is probably Wharton and the College. There is a lot of overlap between the two, so it’s more than feasible to complete a dual degree if you take five courses per semester for eight semesters. Nursing is a difficult degree to complete in four years as it is, so students pursuing Nursing and another degree will almost certainly need to take summer courses and/or stay a fifth year.

All this information is on the respective websites of the schools. Here’s the College website: [The College](http://www.college.upenn.edu/)

It all depend on what school you are in, your major, number of AP

If you come in with no AP, in College, you can do single major and its 4 courses each semester.
For double major, it might be an avg of 5 each.

For engineers, the avg is 5/sem with no AP. With AP, it might get a little easier.
Wharton, 4.5ea.

For dual degree programs, it is usually 6.5ea, unless…you have APs in which case it gets to around 6.

As you can see, it varies quite a lot. Freshman year, you are limited to 5.5max.
