How many people actually submit the Optional Artistic Material?

Hey guys, As I apply to DUKE ED, I want to know:

ESPECIALLY for Early Decision, how many people are actually planning on submitting additional material? I guess, in my case, being a male dancer, out of the 1300 ED applicants to Trinty, how many male dancers do you think would submit optional dance material?

send in anything (well, almost..) and everything that can help describe yourself to the college. i say submit it, it's a unique talent. good luck!

thanks any other opinions? I am just curious as to the uniqueness that I hope to present in an aspect such this.

well, i am thinking that male dancers are a small minority of the applicants. If i were you, i would submit it. I saw this thread and it brought up a question... i am pretty good at photography, no contests, but should i submit a picture or two or is photography too common a artform.

I don't suggest submitting optional artistic material unless you are really good. Just being unusual because you're a male dancer isn't reason enough to submit a dance tape. When you submit tapes, pictures, etc., the adcoms get those materials reviewed by a faculty member in that field. It's a waste of everyone's time if basically your work is ordinary. In that case, simply being a male dancer may make you stand out in the pool because you're unusual, but there's no reason to have a faculty member review the materials unless you're really good. Otherwise, it's a waste of everyone's time and is more likely to irritate the adcoms and faculty members than to interest them.

The same thing goes for art work. Unless you seem to be very talented, no need to submit your work. Just explain what you do in your essay or through your EC list or recommendations.

Sending lots of extra materials is not something that will help you unless those extras are excellent.

Perhaps instead of sending a tape of your dancing to adcoms, you could send it to a dance professor, who can then call the admissions office if they see something in you that's impressive.

With dance, it can be tough for someone with an untrained eye to recognize true talent. I'd rely on a prof way more than an adcom to see potential.

(I'm a dance major by the way)

SO Hey, I plan on submitting a CD of myself playing my own songs with acoustic guitar and piano, but I haven't gotten like state or national awards...btw I'm Asian male who moved here a few years ago.

What do you guys think? Should I even bother or no? I think since that part of myself will not be revealed through the application itself...

Well I believe the adcoms forward the material to the dance professor/art reachers.. don't you think? On the bottom of the sheet, there is a review done by the respective departments.

Im planning to send in my paintings and other art work. Ive been painting since i was 9. However , Im not planning to do an out n out arts course. Im gonna be doing Science as well.

So would it still help if i sent in my material?

Duke- I would suggest you email them and ask. My dd did this to a number of schools, and got mixed responses. She has decided not to send one. Several admissions people said they like to see pictures, however. (That really surprised us!) If you have any that are good of you in a dance move, or one that otherwise is able to show you well in this EC, send that.
