Hello everyone! So this fall during admissions, I hope to include some of my poems as an art supplement. Just wondering how many poems are too much? Would 5-8 of my best ones be OK? Or should I stick to 3-4?
Check out the guidelines offered by the schools you’re applying to. Some will request a specific amount; others will base it on the number of pages. Some, however, may not accept creative writing supplements at all – they only want material from visual or performing artists. It should spell it out on their website. If not, you can always email an admissions counselor to ask.
Assuming that the college(s) to which you plan to send the poems explicitly state that the art supplement may be poetry/creative writing etc.
(1) Have the poems you are planning to submit been vetted, this to mean have they won awards, or have they been published in peer reviewed magazines etc.
(2) Is there someone (e.g. a well known critic or teacher) who has critically reviewed your writing and can provide a recommendation based on the poems you are planning to submit.
If the answer is “no” to 1 and 2 I don’t recommend submitting them.
Thank you both for your insight! & @fogcity, that is really helpful–thank you! also yes to both.
