Supplemental Art Question

So on applications to most colleges, there are additional "art supplement forms" that you fill out if you have a special talent such as playing an instrument, painting, or creative writing. but everyone knows THAT.

My question is, how good should your art BE to include it onto the supplemental form? I write lots of poetry, and i've been told by many my poetry is good - however, as i'm applying to top universities like princeton, i don't know if my poetry would cut it or not. what would be the rule of thumb to include something like poetry on an art supplement? thank you!

It has to be at least an 8 on the EPIA (English Poetry Index of America) to be worthy of being included on a college application to a schools ranked 20 or better by USN&WR. Pretty exact science.

um…can you link me? i can’t seem to find the “english poetry index of america” on google OR wiki, so i’m a tiny bit skeptical

I think poster 2 is pulling your leg. Princeton and others don’t want poetry samples. Don’t submit them.

If you happen to have been published, give a citation. Otherwise, don’t expend resources here. You’ll be accepted/rejected not on the basis of your poetry skill. Good luck to you.

sorry yeah i was.

but now i’m wondering T26E4, why do you say that? how come they have the option of an art supplement if they don’t want submissions of work?

just out of curiosity

Arts Supplement rules vary from college to college, and they can change from year to year. Best is to contact admissions directly if you are uncertain about the rules (usually posted with the required forms on the admissions web site), or you need to discuss whether or not your work is at the level that admissions considers high enough for the supplement process.

Princeton’s categories for the arts supplement are broader than those of many other colleges. One of the categories that they consider is creative writing. The guidelines are:

Creative Writing
Include a portfolio of your work in any or all of
the following media, totaling no more than five
pages: poetry, short stories, novel excerpts,
and translations. Please do not submit
journalism samples or complete books.

But don’t take my reply as the “answer”. Contact Princeton Admissions. If you plan to tour Princeton (highly recommended) ask during the information session. It’s a question that comes up often in such sessions.

wait…so SHOULD i submit my poetry, as fogcity suggets, or SHOULDN’T i, as T26E4 suggests? i’m definitly going to tour princeton and ask, but this is just me being cautious.

About the Princeton Arts Supplement:

Architecture
Submit samples of your work in architecture or design, including blueprints/plans, drawings,
and/or photographs.

Attach a r

maybe relevent, maybe not.
We were told at a WILLIAMS College info session to only include the supplement if someone other than your family or local community ranked your work highly. They were NOT interested in reading/listening to examples that proved you could play the piano. Only interested if you had won competitions etc.
