I'm thinking about sending in four teacher recommendations plus one or two supplemental recs. I truly believe that each one will add something new to my application. When I contacted the schools I'm applying to, they said that "you are more than welcome to submit any number of recommendations". But, do you think this is too many? If so, what do you think is the maximum one should send? Thanks for the advice.

Two teacher recommendations + one supplemental. Do not go over this limit.

Everyone can all send in a recommendation from every teacher that taught them - I’m sure each teacher can add something new (aka how the student performed in that subject), but that’s overdoing it.

If the three recommendations you send are all stellar, colleges know that you’re a good student. You don’t need to send 6 to prove the same point.

I’m not sure about that. It kind of shows that your persistent. Basically it could go wither way:
- show that you really want to get in and so put in extra details
or - kind of annoy them because you sent so many.
You should go for the middle ground and send in like 4 or 5. It won’t actually hurt you to do this and it might add a bonus.

If he sends in 4 that are stellar, it will show that he is a good student in more than 3 fields. If he is a good student, why not?

Don’t overestimate the amount of time an admissions officer has available to spend (let alone, wants to spend) on your individual application. These folks have a lot of paper to get through, and a limited number of days to do it.

I’ve heard some admissions officers say more or less, “Send as many as you like. I’ll pick two and read those.”

i sent in 4 for both applying & appealing.
i would have sent only three each but my schools require a counselor rec, which i wouldn’t have sent if i had a choice.

First off, check out the schools you want to apply to nd see if they tell you how many to send in. Duke, for example, requires two teacher recs and there is one spot for a supplemental rec.

If your schools do not specify, I would not go over 3 recs total. If the admissions officer even reads them all, then it is just going to take time away from them evaluating the rest of your application.

Don’t send them in all at once up front. You should add more recs for those schools that waitlisted you and you really want to go, one at a time to show your interest. That will impress the adcoms the most.
