<p>My parents' approach was that they would be willing to pay a lot for application fees, because they are inexpensive compared to the full tuition they'd have to pay at a lot of schools, and my match-safeties and safety would probably be willing to give me substantial merit money. In reality, I believe that I wouldn't have finished applying to 14 schools in time and would have to have cut several schools off of the list. Lucky that didn't become a problem. :)</p>
<p>^Yes, my parents' (and I) took that position, too. Better to work hard and pay a little now, and have more options- including financial options- later.</p>

<p>I didn't really bother with the safeties because after I won a full tuition scholarship to Madison I knew I'd get in. My friend, who also won that scholarship (it's not really tough), got into Madison with a 2.5 so I wasn't really being overconfident or anything lol.</p>
