I don't have as many schools as most, but I can comment on the reason for more more than one safety.
a) financial aid. Of my two safeties, I could but won't necessarily get a ton of money at both. Applying to one limits my chances in that department.
b) Since safeties are just that - safe - and if you're reaching, will probably be a back up plan...sometimes it's good to have more than one back up plan, and not just have to settle. They say you should love your safeties as much as your reaches, but sometimes that's easier said than done. If your top choice doesn't work out, you'll still have options.

11 ... but 6 are UCs (of which I'm guaranteed into UCI).
so 1 safety
3 matches/reaches
and my private schools are all super reaches

^I thought the UC safety was Davis this year?

3 safeties
1 good match
1 kinda-reach
& 1 i know that i won't get into. haha.

generally 1-3 safety schools, 1 or 2 if you are a good student with a strong app
3-4 target schools
2-3 reach schools

hint, never make an IVY league school a target because they have low acceptance rates even for genius students

^Not even Cornell with their >20% acceptance rate?

1 safety, accepted
2 safety/match, accepted both
1 match
8 reach WOOOO

Only get one chance, might as well aim for the best I can.

My list had fourteen, but now it's eleven which I'm waiting on because I got rejected Stanford EA, and decided not to apply to Chicago or Swarthmore.

so 11 schools
3 im guaranteed in pretty much
3 are more matches, two of which im probably going to get in
the 5 remaining are the cream of the crop colleges which will probably reject me, possibly all of them.

blueducky: i think it's different for students in each area. For my school, all the ELC students are guaranteed to UCI. With the UCs killing off acceptances, im grateful for acceptance to any UC :P

UMM all reaches?
8 schools
3 reaches
3 match
2 safeties

10 schools
2 reaches
8 matches
2 safeties

I've been accepted to 3, deferred from 4, and rejected from 0 so far. I've already removed 3 of the schools that deferred me from my list lol

I applied to 12.

Safe: 2
Match: 5
Reach: 5

Before I began applying I assumed I'd probably go to my safety so I might as well go for the hardest schools, just to see if I'd have another option. I didn't see the appoint of applying to another out of state safety that would probably gve me the same education but would cost much more. Still, I think I might apply to one safety, just to give me more options.
