If I have these AP scores, which would give me 48 credit hours according to the school of engineering and applied science at the UCLA website, can I skip a year and a half of college and get my BA in 3 years?
AP Credit - School of Engineering and Applied Science - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions
Because its just 15 credits for each semester right? So 48 credit hours is more than 3 semesters worth of credits.

Many schools have a cap on how many semesters you can skip. for instance, you could take so many APs that you have enough credit hours to skip all four years of college (as I will have), but obviously that wouldn’t be wise.
I recommend skipping half a year at most, judging by your scores.

bobtheboy, since you seem knowledgeable of this topic, how many years/semesters does 32 credits let you skip? thanks.

i’m pretty sure that 32 credits will allow you to skip 2 semesters in most universities

How many credits are given for 5 AP exams at a state university like Rutgers? How do you calculate that?

Check Rutgers website, there should be a place where it talks about AP credits. Different AP exams give different credits, so it depends on the 5 that you took.

Though you might be able to skip out of intro courses with AP scores, and you might be able to fulfill the minimum credit requirement to graduate from the college, you would not be able to fulfill requirements (specific higher-level courses, lab work, etc.) for your major. Therefore you could not skip all 4 years of college, and you would only be able to graduate early if you can complete the requirements for your major, as well as the minimum credit requirement, by then.

@bobtheboy

How can you skip all four years of college with just APs alone? You kinda need
a major and I don’t think APs can get you that.

He was describing a hypothetical situation. Generally, colleges will let you skip 3 or 4 semesters at most, so you still have to complete your 3rd and 4th years there.

Perhaps I was unclear. You cannot, even if you have enough credit hours from APs, because colleges have a cap on this, for the same reason that you are describing.

Even if colleges don’t have a cap, you still can’t get major required courses with APs, so you can have every single AP and get credit for them, but still not skip 4 years because you need a major.

… exactly
