Hello! My S is applying to some top tier reach schools that would like him to take at least 2 subject test. He already has taken Math II (800) and Physics (results not in yet). He was considering taking Chemistry in August but we aren’t sure if it will make a difference either way. He would need to study for it since it has been a year since AP Chem., and he already will be pretty busy doing a project this summer. Is it worth the extra effort if you can have three great scores on subject test vs 2? Thank you for any input
Look at what the schools of interest recommend.
E.g., Princeton (https://admission.princeton.edu/how-apply/standardized-testing)
So no, if you did well in Math 2 and Physics then there is no reason to take Chem.
Check the requirements of every school he is considering applying to. It may feel tedious to do but there is no real shortcut. You need to check for both number of SAT2’s required/recommended as well as for any specific requirements a school may have (ex. tests needed for a major, any breadth of subjects that should be covered etc.).
For most colleges 2 subject tests is enough. However, I think Georgetown likes to see three (not sure if other colleges do as well). Also if he takes chemistry as his third you must be certain it is OK that all of his subject tests will be in STEM subjects.
Georgetown is the only US college that requests 3.
Really, the question is moot until he gets his physics score back. If he’s happy with the score, there is no need to take chemistry.
