I recall a posting a while back that said that W & M does NOT require any teacher recs and would like to see only 1 teacher rec at most. Is that still pretty much the school's policy ? Thanks

According to the application, the required rec is the GC's; a teacher rec is optional. Here's what the W & M supplement says about teacher recs: "William & Mary does not require any and prefers no more than one." Unless there are truly exceptional circumstances, I think this is a good time for the applicant to show that he/she can follow directions. :)

It kind of surprises me that the school relies so heavily on the GC recommendation - it would seem that teacher recs would offer a more accurate view of the student?

Perhaps. I'm not sure I'd split those hairs on recs.

im out of state and am now attending, last year i sent in a GC rec, and 2 teacher recs (one was an alum)

When we attended the tour/info session this summer, the admissions counselor said that (I remember his quote it was so emphatic) ..."two is perfect- not eighteen- two is wonderful". He was kind of funny talking about applicants who send in numerous recommendations. Apparently he and the other reviewers get overwhelmed with all of them and he really tried to make a point about not overdoing it. Hope this helps.

I'm a current student and I sent in two. I wouldn't be terribly concerned; there's more to the application process than splitting hairs over the difference between one or two recs.

To split hairs yet again: when we're talking about one or two recs, do we mean teacher recs, which are in addition to the GC rec? Our hs requires all seniors to ask two teachers for recs, so there are 2 on file for each student in addition to the GC statement. Current students (or parents of): did you send W & M more than one rec from a teacher?

(And apologies if I should understand without asking again - for some reason I just don't this morning! :) )

I'm a Junior at William and Mary. I sent two teacher rec's. The only reason to send more than one would be that a second rec would have additonal info. You don't need two teacher rec's saying what a great person, student, athlete, humanitarian, brown noser, suck up, etc. I think you get the point. Let your personal statement and your optional submission speak for you. You wouldn't submit a bad teacher rec, would you? They are not important.

Only one are needed!

My friend sent in 3 teacher recs and one GC rec and he got in ED...that's what I'm doing, too. It's only because my third teacher rec is from an alum.
