How many times...

How many times is too many times to take it?

I took it June of my soph year, Oct. of junior year, and April of junior year. My score has stayed the same every time!! However, my Reading has improved from a 28 first time to a 32 most recently. It seems like everytime one subject area goes up, another goes down. Because of this, I know I can beat my 28 Composite score... if I superscored it I'd have a 31... should I take it one more time to try?

Beyond 3 is too much usually, but in your case, I'd retake it one more time. Just make sure you study out of one of those ACT books (I recommend either Kaplan or PR).

Why is beyond 3 too much? You may select your highest score on any one seating, so what is the downside to taking it every couple of months, if you have the spare cash to do that?

take it as many times as you want.

That's just it; some people genuinely don't know when to quit. You can take the ACT as many times as you wish; why not start take the ACT every time it is offered starting your freshman year of high school if you have the money? The point is that it's too much time, effort, and money being wasted on a single test and the last thing kids need right now is for the test to be emphasized more than it already is. You have to know when enough is enough; otherwise you'll go crazy.

I say beyond three is generally too many times simply because it makes sense to me: two times one's junior year and one time one's senior year (fall, before applications are due.) Between all that time, one should see a score increase, but since the OP is not, that is why I'm suggesting taking it one more time.

Of course, my suggestion of usually taking the test no more than three times is simply an opinion. Take it or leave it.

Okay, thank you for clarifying.

take it as many times as you want. if you don't mind all the things that come with the ACT then do it. also, if you think you can improve then take it again until you think you've hit your peak score.

Does your state offer Sept testing? If so, do it then before Sr year gets a hold of you. Have you ordered any of your past tests to see where your weaknesses may be?

yeah, we have Sept. testing, and that's when I plan to take it again if I choose to. I have looked at past tests, and science just kills me everytime... the questions I miss don't consistently correspond to a certain part, (graphs, analysis, etc.) but are all over the place, so I never know what to actually study/practice. Math is usually silly mistakes, and what I miss in English I just didn't know.. and reading is improving so I'm not too concerned about that. I took an ACT prep class before my most recent test, and obviously it didn't help much. I think I'll do some serious studying on my own and retry... thanks for the helpful comments everyone :)

One more note, have you tried reading the questions first in science and "finding" the answers in the passages? This is supposedly an effective strategy for some, with the only exception being the contrasting scientists' views passage, which should be read in its entirety.
