how many years of foreign language...

i read that stanford wants 3+ years of a foreign language
but at my school, if you take spanish 4, thats AP spanish
and i do NOT want to take ap spanish
would taking 4 give me an upper hand?
how many years of a foreign language are yall taking?

they don't care that much. it's RECOMMENDED but not required. people get in without taking ap spanish.

i took ap spanish. it was horrid. mainly b/c my teacher went on maternity leave a month before the ap exam.

My daughter got in with only 3 years of Spanish. There is a language requirement at Stanford that you can test out of, but my daughter wanted to take Italian, so did not try to test out of Spanish with only three years.

3 years is just fine. Say goodbye to Spanish and feel good about it :)

do you guys know if those three years only count if taken in high school?

I took spanish I in 8th grade then spanish II in 9th and spanish III at summer school.

Would this be seen as 2 or 3 years of foreign lang?

call them and ask

I have a question, since i am chinese, and i emigrated to Canada with my family lastyear, in my school , they offer mandarin french, and spanish, i took none of them.

what i did was i took the mandarin challenge test and passed. which can replace my mark in the "real class" if i took it.

but since chiense is my first language, will that count for my foreign language just because i did it in Canada

and i have been in here for only 14months, and i am graduating next june, it is absolutely impossible for me to have 3-4years of foregin lang.

so what can i do?

thanx

You'll be exempt of foreign language requirement, since you are obviously fluent in mandarin.

thank you nngmm!!!

i tried e-mailing them a while back but all i got was an automated response...

That's just a confirmation that they recieved your message. If it's really unique, they will reply back in person.

how do you test out of it? AP scores?

Yeah AP or SAT2

SAT II is easier (you only have to get 630 or so) - you can find all that info on Stanford's web site.
