Can a person only apply to a certain number of med schools after finishing undergrad?

Not really so sure on that one...

Go to www.mdapplicants.com

That's an awesome site.

I don't think there is a maximum number of schools you can apply to, although the cost of applying to schools could limit you. Most people these days apply to several, in the hopes of being accepted to at least a few of them. I think BlueDevilMike said in another thread that most people apply to 15-20 med schools.

How much does it usually cost per school?

I imagine that they raised the cost a little bit in the past two years, but I believe that applying at all is like $165 and then $35 for each additional school after that first one.

Secondary applications cost any where from $40 to over $100 and are collected by the schools themselves.

There are a lot of people who do apply to 15-20, and if you are applying predominantly to "name" private schools, you need to reach that many (but don't forget you may have to interview so that drives the cost up even more). If you are content with a state education, which by all means you should be b/c it's med school, then you can probably get by with fewer. Funny thing is that, of the guys in my fraternity who have applied and been accepted in the last 5 years, I applied to the most schools of anyone. The two oldest guys (who just graduated - one at Nebraska, one at Missouri) applied to 4 schools each. The current M3 applied to 2 (Nebraska and Creighton), the other two guys in my M1 class each applied to 5, and the guy behind us who is starting in August applied to 6, even though he had the highest MCAT score of anyone.

Anyways - the costs add up - primary app, secondary app, flight/gas/hotel for interviews - and do so at an extraordinary rate.
