Is it OK to apply for more than 15 colleges ?

My DS is applying for 7 year BS/MD programs and each college has only a few seats . So is it OK to apply for like 20 colleges or so ?

You can. It’s just a lot more work. I hope he has a safety he’d be happy to attend and you can afford on his list.

Make sure your high school will allow that many applications. Some limit the number that students can apply to

I would balance those “direct” programs with applications to schools without the direct link. We have two friends who had the rules change on them during their undergrad program, and struggled to gain admission to medical school with an undergrad degree that wasn’t as well respected.

One student in particular had an outstanding high school record. He eventually went to a school with students not in his league for the link to med school, and his junior year the program changed and his guarantee evaporated overnight. He could have gone to an Ivy or very selective LAC, and ended up applying to med schools from a mid-tier regional university (unsucessfully).

They were so focused on the guarantee that they surrendered rigor and prestige for the sure thing… only it wasn’t so sure after all.

Thanks Eyeveee - I had no idea “guaranteed rule” can change.

Also, note the conditions of the “guarantee” (even if they do not change). College GPA requirements are often very high, and there may be high MCAT score requirements, among other requirements that may weed out students who entered the BA/BS->MD/DO program.

What if he changes his mind about med school? Lots of kids start pre-med and never go to med school. Has he shadowed any doctors? Any doctors in the family?

Would he be happy to attend any of these 20 schools without the med school guarantee? If not, maybe they’re not a good fit.

I know there are some very knowledgeable CC people when it comes to med school. I think there’s another forum on CC just for med school. Maybe post there. I think @WayOutWestMom is knowledgeable about med schools.
