What's the city/school relationship like at Emory? Do students typically take advantage of the cultural scene or is the school pretty much and island?

Both of my sisters went there and they said it’s practically a bubble. Unless you’re friends with upperclassmen with cars, you’re probably not going to make it out to downtown Atlanta that often for the first year or so. The marta, as I’ve heard, is pretty sketch so kids don’t use it for public transport. There’s an emory shuttle that takes you to lenox mall and publix, but I don’t know if you really want to consider that interaction with the cultural scene…:P

Oh yeah, and if you’re the typical college student, you’re going to be broke. You can’t really take advantage of all the great restaurants if you’re on a budget.

I’m a freshmen this year, and I’d say that it’s what you make of it. There’s experience shuttles every weekend that explore the city, and people who want to go out for parties and such. MARTA is limited but very usable and safe as long as you’re comfortable that a good 80% of the riders will be african american.

I don’t think there’s a ton of interaction first year because of the car and $ problem, but there’s so much to do on campus as well, other things to do. I’ve gone on several retreats, and had a blast. Yeah, there’s a bubble, but being in the bubble isn’t that bad, and it’s not too hard to reach out if you want to. :)
