How much clothes should I bring?

Hi I'm an incoming freshman, and I'm currently planning on bringing 99% of all the clothing I have in my closet at home. I'm basically bringing everything from shorts and T-shirts to thick winter jackets and sweatshirts to dress shirts and etc. Is this a bad idea? I've heard several people say it's better to only bring the lighter clothes during the fall semester and leave the winter clothes at home until winter break, during which they would take all their summer/fall clothes back home and bring the winter clothes to college. That just seems like unnecessary work to me, and who knows if my parents or siblings might try to wear some of the clothes I leave behind while I'm gone? But if that's what most college students do, then I guess I can give it a try...

If you are close enough to visit home every now and then, you should really only bring summer clothes for the first couple months. You won’t need warm clothing until late October.

I’m from the Pacific Northwest, so unfortunately for me, I was far away from home AND I didn’t realize that Texas can be cold – so I was wearing shorts and t-shirts in 45-50 degree weather in November and December, haha.

Having said that,

I would look into vacuum packing winter clothes. If you have like a lot a lot of clothes.

I mean, I live close enough as to where I can go home for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but it’s not like I can go back home every other weekend or every 3-day weekend. Should I still leave my winter clothes at home except for a few light jackets?

Yup, and don’t forget long pants to wear at night! Some of the dorms are unreasonably cold in the mornings, haha. I only brought shorts, and some mornings I had to wrap a towel around my legs… it was ridiculous.

Yeah about that…the rooms at Jester East during orientation were freezing cold at night, and I couldn’t find any thermometers in the room. Is there any way to adjust the temperature? And on a bit related note, the showers were super cold too, and I couldn’t get the warm water to work. Does warm water not work in Jester showers or something?

Warm water definitely does work in the showers. Sometimes it gets too hot. It depends on the time of day though.

There is one thermostat for every 50 rooms or so. Unfortunately for me, the people with the thermostat refused to identify themselves, even after the RA asked everyone.

How often will you wash your clothes? That is the main question. College isn’t a fashion show for most. Tshirts, shorts, underthings, and couple pairs of jeans, light rain jacket, sleep wear of some sort if you have to walk down the hall during the night or have a roommate and comfortable shoes. If you are a girl, perhaps throw in a couple of dresses/skirts, but probably not necessary. That should about do it. Try to bring stuff that can be mixed and matched. Try to bring stuff that doesn’t wrinkle. Make it easy on yourself. Closet space/drawer space is likely very limited. So, pack wisely!!

Also, you should bring a set of formal clothes for career expos, interviews, or just generally formal events.
