How much do most colleges count freshman year?

My freshman year did not go very well. I started my freshman year with a mix of B's and C's. I finished the first semester with an 84.65. Next semester went worse with a mix of mostly C's one B and even one D(ik terrible). I finished second semester freshman year with a 78.85. Now this year I'm a sophomore and I've stepped it up a lot more and currently have an 87.80. If I can maintain or improve my current grades through senior year, will colleges like Purdue, Wisconsin, Virginia, Indiana look past my freshman year grades and possibly accept me? Btw if this makes a difference I go to one of the top private schools in my state and I got a 22 on my Plan test and a 156 on my PSAT as a sophomore.

Even for Ivy league schools, as long as you show an upward trend from grade 9 you will be fine. You may look even better than some others, mainly because you have shown that you developed an interest in learning and pushed yourself to get better grades. Now you will have to work a bit harder to show this upward trend (I’m thinking 70’s to 80’s to 90’s in one year or less), but if you do it looks good to colleges.

PS: Just wondering, is this private school you go to notoriously tough to get good grades in? If there is a problem like that, be sure to have your guidance counselor mention it during the applications process. You’re at a severe disadvantage compared to public schools if this is true, as hard work+ lots of studying can easily get you near perfect in every course in my school.
