How much do old bad grades effect your chances?

I dropped out at a csu 7 years ago; failing all of my classes my last semester.

I'm now in my third semester at a community college with strait A's. I'll have most of the desired major preperation courses completed by the time I transfer next fall as a CS major.

I will have most or all of the desired major preperation courses cometed with perfect grades. Still my overall GPA will only be a 2.8 when I apply, and a 3.15 at the time I hope to transfer.

How much is my past going to haunt me? With this low of an overall GPA, will my application even get looked at?

I want to get into the best CSU, or UC possible. Where do you think it would be possible for me to get accepted?

What is GPA requirements of the CS major transfer at UC & CSU?
What is your GPA at community college? 2.8 or 3.15?

If CC>UC or CC>CSU, you’re good.

If CC<UC and CC<CSU, you’ll have some roadblocks.

I’m not sure about GPA requirements. I’m also not certain from which perspective my GPA will be examined. My CC GPA is a 4.0. My overall GPA is a 2.8. I have no idea how to figure out what my UC transferable GPA is.

It’s been 7 years since I’ve received imperfect grades. By the end of next summer I will have graduated from my CC; probably with a 4.0 and an associates in both Math and Computer Science.

Here’s a list of the schools I would like to transfer to (in order):

UC Berkeley
Cal Poly SLO
UC San Diego
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
UC Santa Barbara
San Jose State
Sacramento State

My councilor scared me by suggesting that a computer program might sort my application too far down on the list to even be reviewed. I’m not sure she knows what she is talking about though; I hope not.

I wonder if it would be better for me to wait an extra semester; so that my overall GPA will be higher before I apply.

I’m also quite confused about the, “max UC transferable units earned before transfer”, restrictions that some UC’s enforce. I have been unable to figure out which courses, from SJSU, will be considered UC transferable. It seams I’ll just need to apply and see what happens.
