How much do standardized test scores matter?

I am a competitive (word used a lot by admissions at tech) candidate in every aspect except SAT/ACT scores. So I was wondering what kinds of scores are acceptable for engineering. I know GT doesn't look at them as much as at other schools, but it is still a concern for me.

They matter quite a bit at GIT in fact I would say if you're not over 700 on the math portion of the SAT it will hurt you more than you might think

How about ACT scores? I know that they are done here by math and English only.

if you are in the mid 600 you should be fine they are important but as long as you have other stuff it will be okay

Well, I have a 4.2 and a 4.0 (Weighted and Unweighted), have some college credits already, lab experience, top 10% in my class, and about 250 hours of ECs. But yeah...I am under 600 on SATs and only a 25 on the ACT. I am gonna work on the ACT since I feel better about it and hopefully I can boost it up a bit.

I've heard so many stories of how GT accepts their students. The one that I've been told numerous times is as follows:

Val/Sal/High rank compared to rest of class:

Acceptable to have slightly lower than average scores though around a 600-700 would still be preferred for Math at least. Obviously the person needs to have a pretty decent essay with ECs or else the chances starting dropping exponentially.

If you're not Val/Sal or really high up in rankings, but around top 10%-20% or so, with the same ECs (a little bit more than the Val/Sal dude/gal), slightly better essay, and upper 600s -lower 700s in Math and 590- mid 600s in Verbal, I'd say you have a pretty darn good chance of getting in.

For everyone else I can't be sure of. But I'm sure the acceptances will still be more of the form of roughly 3 acceptances out of every 4 or 5 or so...

Heh, well 90 people in my class and I am 15ish. The difference from 1-25 is like .5 GPA or less. I know the number 1 and 2 are applying to GIT for computer engineering or something like that. So I need 30s on the ACT or 600s on math and verbal. I got some work to do!
