How Much Does A Bad Freshman and Sophomore Year Hurt

Freshman:
UW: 2.86 (2.7 Core Class UW GPA)
W:3.12
C in Honors Biology and Honors Geometry
I took 2 honors classes total (Bio and Geom)

Sophomore:
UW: 3.06 (2.7 Core Class UW GPA)
W: 3.21
C in PST and Spanish 2
Took 1 honors (Chemistry) and got a B & one advanced (not as high as honors but above average, no weighting awarded) class (PST)

Junior (So Far):
UW: 3.73 (3.5 Core Class UW GPA)
W: 4.0+
Am taking 1 AP (Chem), 1 honors class (English) and 1 advanced class (Pre-Calc)

Next Year:
AP Environmental
AP Stat
AP US Pol & Gov
AP Lit
Honors Calc
Honors Physics

Almost positive I got 2000+ on my SAT's (took them in march), will likely prep more and take again for 2100+

I am applying to schools like GaTech, UIUC, Purdue, Wisconsin, etc.

Have I completely screwed up my chances with my freshman and sophomore grades?

Can someone weigh in on this? Please

It would probably be better if you had a heavier courseload, but only one or two honors classes? There isn’t really much of an excuse… That said, I also got a C in Honors Bio (LOL) but, like you, have gotten really good grades junior year, which is the most recent and therefore most important in college admissions.

These grades will hurt you, make no mistake about that, but your chances at Purdue may be all right (doubtful about Wisconsin unless you’re in-state and have good test scores, then maybe, same at UIUC). What do you wanna go into? We can always offer some recommendations, or you can transfer from a CC.

I want to go into engineering, undecided as to which type specifically, likely chemical.

I don’t want to go to CC. I know for a fact (almost) that I can get into a number of decent engineering schools (mostly state schools). I could transfer after that if I wanted. I think Wisconsin is probably the easiest of the 4 to get into for engineering (maybe interchangeable with purdue), especially because I live a solid 20 hours away by car and they like the diversify their campuses with students from as many states as possible.

About my test scores, I want a 2100, on my last test I think an accurate score range would be between 1900 and 2150, and if I don’t break 2100 I will just take about 2 practice tests a week and use study halls to review incorrect answers until I take it again. Test scores shouldn’t be a problem for me.

Anyone else have an idea of how deep of a hole I put myself in?
Also, should I address this in my essay?

Can someone else answer?

Can someone else reply please?

106 views and only 1 reply??? Someone please answer this for me.

Your overall GPA definitely hurts you. Also your classes don’t really reflect your desire to become an engineer. UIUC will be a high reach since i last I checked it was a top 15 engineering school.

Thanks, Nirvanafan. All of those schools are top 15 for engineering. They are easier to get into than one would think. I am asking how much my low freshman and sophomore GPA will hurt me. I really stepped it up junior year and I hope colleges realize.

Well colleges like an updward trend, and that’s definitely seen. However, they also like to see that you’re getting involved with things that interest you. If you’re interested in engineering I think they’d expect you to have excellent grades in math, so there’s really no excuse for the lack thereof freshman and sophomore year.

I had a C in honors bio and honors geom freshman year, A C in PST and a B in honors chem sophomore year and an A in precalc and a B in AP chemistry junior year. I also have a 750 math SAT.

Anyone else?

im in a very similar situation. however my freshman gpa was a 3.0 , sophomore 3.3 and now junior will be a 3.8.
this being said, im looking to get into an ivy league. dont know how likely.
sorry i cant help more.
