How much does a "W" on the transcript matter?

I am a senior in high school and am about a month and a half into AP Physics. This class is a complete nightmare for me. I try very hard but still cannot understand the content at all. The homework takes me forever because the teacher gives a lot of it AND I take forever trying to figure it out. I will probably end up working my ass off for a C/C-. I have always taken the hardest courses possible at my high school and have never gotten below an A-, so this is huge for me. I'm taking 3 APs and an Accelerated besides physics this year and have an A in all of them. My GPA is 4.86/5, top 3% of the class and I have high test scores and tons of ECs.

So, for applying to high/medium-high end schools how much would dropping AP Physics (and getting a W) for a class like economics or legal hurt me? For more information - I'm applying to all business schools such as NYU, UT Austin, USC, Upenn, BC, Georgetown, Villanova, etc.

Thanks.

Damn, you have a 4.86 WGPA and you're in the top 3%? I've got a 4.93 W, and just barely made 15%. >.<

Anyway, I understand where you're coming from. I would say stay in Physics, because although I myself HATE math/science, I'm really regretting some bad decisions I made and advice I received. See my post about it.

But depends what you would transfer to. If it's another well-respected class then sure, but if it's some bs like Creative Writing, do NOT do it. Stick it out if you don't have any other good options.

Its 4.86 out of 5. Its some weird system my school uses where an A in an accelerated or AP class is a 5.0.

Moshe, if you have a 4.93 on a 5.0 scale... well that's just incredible. I am happy with my 4.55 on a 5.0 scale. It wouldn't even be possible to have a 4.93 at my school because of gym requirements and such.

yeah, i do have a 4.93, but i'm not even in the top 10% of my class. our valedictorian is a 5.2

raptor, stay in physics. i'm seriously messed up now because of some bad advice. just put up with it; you'll be better off in the long run.

I don't neccessarily think that's true, Moshe.

Raptor, do you like physics? Is it something you are interested in? Do you plan on taking more physics in college?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, I would reccommend staying.

However, if you couldn't honestly answer yes to any of those...then I don't see how dropping this class and replacing it with another challenging class that is of use to you will be seen negatively.

colleges like rigorous math and science, even if you're not going to major in it.

i want to major in literature, so i have honors english 9, 10, 11 with all "A"s plus AP eng this year. i've also got creative writing 1 and 2, and creative writing 3 honors. but i've got no honors science except physics and no math above algebra ii, so i'm totally screwed.
