How much does Class Rank Matter?

<p>I was ranked 2nd in my class, but after this semester I think I have dropped to like 7th. This got me wondering... how much does class rank matter?</p>

<p>7 in a class of how many? If it is 7 in a class of 100, it is still good. If it is 7 in a class of 8, yeah, pretty bad. But if it is 7 in a class of 800, fantastic!!!</p>

<p>If your GPA is like a 3.5 it matters.</p>

<p>It sort of tells colleges what your GPA means. At schools with a lot of grade inflation a 4.0 means nothing, but at harder schools a 3.5 might make you the valedictorian.
I don’t think there’s any major difference between 2nd and 7th, though.</p>

<p>class rank is the most important part of your application. but colleges won’t really care whether you’re 2nd or 7th. either way, it’s clear that you’re at the top (assuming your class has at least ~80 kids)</p>
