Ok... so I just found out that my class rank jumped from third to first out of 170 this past semester (the first of my senior year), and I have already applied to Princeton with my previous rank. I know there's a spot on the Common App midyear report to highlight this, but should I highlight this fact in a more notable manner, or would it not be worth it?

You might have your counselor call and tell them. I assume that after 7 semesters, being ranked 1=valedictorian. You can have your counselor tell them that as well.

This is going to sound crazy, but i honestly think being ranked first is to no advantage and perhaps to a disadvantage at a school like princeton (assuming you're already ranked top 5 or 10). I mean...it seems like they want to turn down vals a.) to say they did and b.) to avoid having a class of all vals. Just my crazy opinion, though.

umm. how much does it hurt if I get two Bs in classes for 2nd quarter, after having had straight As throughout my high school record?

I hope it won't hurt much. Because I also got my first B this semester. grrr freaking 89 in AP English. Now I have a 3.98. It's so ugly compared to the 4.0 I used to have.

yes, a bit harder, cuz I was taking an out of school course at Hopkins where the professor just sucked and I ended up studying the material myself

According to Fiske's Guide of Colleges 2007, 45% of Princeton's matriculating class is filled with valedictorians... so I guess it'll help somewhat.
But, I read somewhere that Princeton rejects 4 out of 5 valedictorians, so then again...

Goody. My rank is like 18 of 250, midyear it should go up a bit, maybe to like 15. My school sucks cause it doesn't weight anything and I skipped easy classes and took the hardest ones I could. We have like 8 valedictorians, I wonder how many less there will be after this semester... hmmmm. I honestly have had the worst teacher luck though. 1 teacher for 2 years that underwent chemo and was gone for like half of each year, one thats just an insanely hard grader (got a 5 on AP test, A- in class) one thats just old/crazy/senile and doesn't have a real grading system, and then the one that gave me an a- by like .1 percent that would have been like 3 more points on the 175 or so point exam that I wrote an essay for that was about how I hated english so much that I never wanted to take it again. (OK, that last one probably could have been helped) If I get lucky, Princeton drops minuses and plusses like UMich and I have a 4.0! yay. and I definately have the hardest course load.

lol that was a long rant. Anywhoo, I feel good about my apps and I hope I will come April.

The importance of your class rank is largely dependent on the quality of your school. For example, if you go to TJHSST, the admissions office won't be too concerned if you're not in the top 10%. Like others said, just use the mid-year report, and don't expect it to make a huge difference.

oh okay my semester is over already anyway.
I was just wondering because it's going to take my counselor a while to get the midyear reports out because they're still busy with fixing everyone's schedules and stuff.
Thanks!

Why does the Princeton Mid Year Report say 1st grading period, 2nd grading period when every other one just asks for the semester average? I'm just freaking out because I missed about 1/3 of the 2nd six weeks in one particular class (AP/IB Calc BC) and came out with a 79. My counselor said she would include an explanation of why I did so badly (I just missed wayyy too much class for doctor's appointments/MRIs/CT scans/trips to the hospital), but still...79! I didn't think anybody would ever see it because I managed a B for my semester average...but nope, apparently Princeton will!

crap, is that only the princeton specific one? My quarter grades always have a bad quarter for some classes, I don't want colleges seeing those. they're b+s, but still.
