I am just wondering.. to those of you know who people who got in without ranking 1 2 in a class of like 300 - 400... did they have any special hook? most schools in canada dont rank, so my counselor said im in about the top 2% of my grade... i hope they won't see that as i am not ranked high enough... b/c if they really did an unweighted rank, it would be prob in the top 2.... how importance is an exact rank anyway?

not very...honestly. its a huge jumbled matter of course rigor, scholastic reputation, if you took opportunities or not, and etc. my friend was ranked 17 in a class of 140 or so and he got in to harvard...without any special 'hook'. i mean, you dont have to be frikken god to get into college!

i did. i was ranked 8/454. Aside from being from Alaska, which Im sure was a huge factor, I explained to them WHY my grades were not as "high" as they should have been. I was taking care of my little brother for about a year and that kind of pressure was sure to have some impact on my academics. they pretty much understood.

They understand that rank differs a lot state by state, district by disrtict. So, they have regional officers who know ABOUT the school's policies. And don't worry, Top 2% or salutarian is FINE.

i ranked 3/410. not 1 or 2...am i safe?

It's not that important. Honestly, do you think Princeton's going to make a decision based on whether a person is ranked 1, 2, or 3? It's a culmulative thing.

yeah thats true. the thing is that if ur a val. then it stands out. just like a 1600 would rather than a 1550
