My intended major is plant biology. I've done two research experiments at the local university (Missouri U. of Science and Technology). One is a bio-chemistry experiment and the other is a bio-engineering experiment.
Both experiments have to do with plants and utilzing them (For ex. the bio-chem one has to do with farming algae and utilizing it to produce alternative fuel).
I only heard that Cornell admissions likes to see applicants with ECs that prepare them for their major. But how much does research actually help?

I think they help quite a bit, especially if they're related to your intended major.
However, do not rely on them as a crutch because universities know that a high school student can not really contribute anything serious in terms of research.
