How much does SAT Writing really count for Ivies?

I think it is like everything else, it depends on your total package. If everthing else is outstanding, then less so, but if not more so.

I think it would count more negatively than positively. What I mean is that if you've got a high-600 and up, it's not really going to help you because that's what all the applicants have, but if you've got like <650 it could hurt a bit because it puts you a step back from the rest of the applicant pool.

I mostly agree with BronxBombers7, but I think the cutoff for where your scores cease to negatively affect you should be shifted up to around 700.

Does what you score on your ESSAY in the writing section matter? My daughter scored 660 and then 720 in writing, but both times only scored a 7 on her essay. Does that matter or do they only look at the 720?

Colleges know what you score on the essay, but I doubt they consider it separately from the overall writing score. They are much more interested in the quality of your application essay than what you wrote in a cramped room one Saturday morning on a generic and cliche topic.

They just came out with research that says the writing part is the best predictor of college success on the whole freakin' test.( see last week's NY Times) That may mean that ivies and others will start taking it more seriously than before. Basically I think in the past it only mattered if it were very high (Like about 750) or very low. That may now change.

800 on W seems to help tremendously at H (which had a role in
getting Essays and W section into the SAT I in the first place) and
at P.

^It helped for me. :D

In theory it should help somewhat for UCs too as the new sat was partially remade because of them. I've read about quite a few schools that don't consider yet as it is too new and not enough stats+research are known about it.

I'm glad to hear that it counts at HP.
