I got PSAT results back today, and I scored a 227, which is lower than I had hoped (I scored a 2330 on the October SAT). My writing was a 70, while on the October SAT it was an 800. Oh well, stupid mistakes. I'm definitely a National Merit Semifinalist, but I feel like my score is a bit low compared to the scores National Merit Finalists might have. So, in the application for National Merit Finalist status, how much does PSAT score factor in? I'm planning to retake the SAT and am hoping to score higher; will a high SAT score offset a less than ideal PSAT score? Is SAT score (or grades/essay/ECs) more important than PSAT score on the National Merit app?

It is my understanding (and I am no expert) that the PSAT qualifies you as a SF but is not an issue in moving on to F status. There are 16k SF and 15K F. The important thing is not to have any issues that would disqualify you such as not completing the application, an SAT below some point (I’ve heard in the range of 1900-2000), lower grades (I’ve heard even a C or two could matter), disciplinary issues, etc. Congratuations on your PSAT score and good luck with the rest of your academic career.

Definitely be careful with those junior year grades. C’s will sink you, even if they are in AP or college classes no matter what your extra curriculars and SAT score are. And FYI, the confirming SAT score does not include the essay portion of the writing score. For 2014, the required SAT score was again 1960, using the formula CR+Math+Multiple Choice Writing - (adding a zero to the MC Writing score found on your full SAT score report).
