How much does the writing section matter to colleges?

I'm sure many of you have heard that some colleges ignore writing scores or put little weight on them (partly because of its novelty and partly because of the subjectivity of the essay section). How true is that?

I had perfect scores in both cr and math, but a 660 in writing (68/8). I have never scored this low in writing before (at least I got into the New York Times for it, haha). Retaking seems rather unappealing, but I'd do it if it'll make enough of a difference. However, I don't think I'd be able to score another 800 in cr...I do have a 730 in writing from January with a 10 essay. That isn't outstanding, but satisfactory...only for schools that superscore. What should I do?

p.s. I'm asian.

what was your multiple choice components? if it isn’t 76 or above there isn’t much of a point.

I can’t remember my first one. I think it was 72, or whatever 3 wrong was. This month, I had a 68.

What do you mean you got into the NYT?

It does matter, since it’s considered significantly lower than your other scores, but you did get a 2200+ so it shouldn’t be a big deal. I’d say it depends on the colleges you are aiming for, but others would have more experience gauging that.

Like many others on this site, I’m looking at top-tier/ivies. I thought about it a bit more, and I dont think I will be retaking. Most of the schools I’m looking at superscore, and I have a LOT of projects and research to work on.
