As a junior last year, I took some classes through a University near me. My school weights those classes just like APs. Last year, they forgot to weight them in our GPA. Just a few days ago, the school went back and changed that. My weighted GPA went from a 4.3 to a 4.39. My class rank also went up from 14/111 to 11/111 so I moved up to the top 10%. I have applied to Vanderbilt(ED), JHU, UPenn, and some state schools. Should I have my guidance counselor resend my transcript with my new class rank?
I would
Yes, probably. At our high school at least, being in the top 10% is a big deal. Also, if you look at the common data set for these schools you are applying to, you can see what percentage of their admitted students were in the top 10%. I bet it’s a fair amount.
Yes. It may not make much of a difference but always put forth your best.
Send them.
There’s no downside to updating your rank. Your GC can resend the transcript or possibly just report the new rank.
If you live in Texas, being in the top 10% gives you automatic admission to all Texas public universities except for UT Austin, assuming that you have course work requirements and such fulfilled.
Use top 10% wisely. For state universities and schools not in the Top 20 it will help you stand out. However, applying it Top 20 schools questions will be raised why you are behind.
Yes, resend it.
Might not be a big deal, but when you look at the statistics, an overwhelming majority of kids were in the top 10% of their class. It will probably only help a little, but at selective schools like Vandy, Penn, Hopkins, every little bit counts.
@nevergiveupp our first decile at my school is all within like .04 of each other and I think that’s on our college profile thing the counselors send in. Rank doesn’t matter much at my high school since everyone does so well. Our average ACT is like a 29.8 The only reason I’m a tad behind is because I got B in honors geometry sophomore year while the other 10 people ahead of me got As. My school is so hyper competitive that one or two Bs can knock you out of the top 10. However I have some good hooks that should make up for the fact that I’m not Val/Sal.
It’s up to you in the end whether or not you want to submit rank! I definitely empathize with you, as I am in the botton half of my top 10% as well. I wish you the best in whatever you decision may be.
@nevergiveupp have you ever thought about submitting decile instead? I wonder if that could be a good option
Yes you should resend it. Universities like to list how many students were in the top 10% of the class. I would absolutely send it everywhere you are applying.
Yes, that’s actually what I intend to do for schools like MIT, Yale, JHU. I am only ticking Top 10% on the common app, and not submitting my exact rank. But I gave my exact rank to Rice and Vanderbilt, because they realize my school is competitive.
