I am currently a junior in high school and for the past few years I have been very interested in majoring in computer science. In the fall I plan on applying early decision to FSU and so I was wondering whether my chances change depending on if i’m applying for CS or undecided. I’m female also so would that have any influence since we are less common in my chosen major?
Depends on the college.
For Florida State University
Check if the school admit you directly into the major or just the school. If it is admitted into the program like UIUC, then your intended major may affect your chance.
It depends from school since most of them have a room for each major.
I’m looking for computer science
Have you taken the SAT or ACT?
What’s your GPA?
I took the SAT in the fall without any studying to get a base score, I got a 1780. I’m taking the ACT in April. 3.4 GPA, I’m coming from in-state
Your SAT scores aren’t bad for FSU, but if you can get at least 1850+ will be great since your GPA is kind of low.
I hope for my scores to go up significantly after I actually study to take the SAT again in August. If it helps i’m also president of my school’s newspaper and have done two years of colorguard/winterguard. So should I apply as undeclared or CS?
Also increase your GPA if you can. I think you can go for CS. Best of Luck.
Thanks. I’m trying to finish my high school career with all A’s so that should help
I was accepted to FSU in December but will not be attending. Your GPA is pretty low (so make sure you apply to other schools!). Your SAT score is alright, but a higher one will only help.
Also, unless you have the Math and science scores to back it up, don’t put CS down.
That could be true. But FSU just look for the math and reading scores.
@Jr12317 That makes sense. Instead of scores, I probably should’ve attend grades in there as well. For example, a straight A student in history and English will look better applying to Economics or English compared to a B/C student in those same subjects.
Yup, that’s true.
Your 3.4 GPA if that is weighted is low for FSU, whose middle 50% range was 3.8 to 4.3 in 2014. So you need to come up significantly for a real chance for admission.Your current SAT is OK but in the lower end of the middle 50% range of 1760 to 1960.
FSU does not have early decision. It has an early action program where all those who apply by mid Oct and get all needed materials in by then including test scores and grades, will get a decision mid-Dec of admit, deny or deferred to March. All those who apply after mid-Oct and by mid-Jan, and all those deferred during early action get a decision in March. You speak of improving your GPA but be aware the only grades that will count for early action are those through Junior year and thus you have only this semester to raise your GPA… For those who apply after Oct for the March decison time, mid senior year grades need to be submitted and will be considered and thus if your GPA has not risen by the end of this semester to at least be in the middle 50% range, you may want to wait to apply after mid Oct.
As to whether computer science may be harder to get into than some other majors, the answer is probably if you are referring to grades and test scores needed. It is a popular major but more important majority of those who apply for it have grades and test scores higher than the average applicant to the university and thus just being barely into the published middle 50% range for grades and test scores for the university as a whole may not be enough for computer science.
