For D1, “fit” did involve cost and academics but not in the sense of “cheapest school” and “highest academic standards.” We could pay for the school she chose even though it was slightly more expensive than our state flagship. The academic standards are higher at the state flagship but our daughter would have struggled to do well there and she did extremely well at the school she attended.
