How much is too much?

I’m really close to my mom and went to a school really far away. How much should I talk/Skype with her? Is everyday too much?

Do whatever feels right for the both of you! Everybody’s relationship with their parents is different. I texted my mom every day and emailed my dad almost every day and my university was only 20 minutes from my house. It’s all up to you!

As long as you’re both happy, then there’s no amount that is too much or too little.

You will figure out what works for you and your mom. There are no rules about this.

Can you talk to my daughter on my behalf? Lol!

It’s no one’s business how much you talk to your parents, but please please please don’t do it in your room when your roommate is there. Phone calls/Skype are meant for the common room or elsewhere when both people are in the room. It’s just common courtesy.

Talk to them however much feels natural. FWIW, I talk to my dad at least 3-4 times a week (1-3 min calls) and my mom about once a week (5-10 min call).

Definitely depends on the length of the call and the roommate. When my roommate was playing video games on his computer and I get a call from my dad that I might not want the ten people in the common room to hear/don’t feel like standing in a stairwell, I’d take it in the room.

Tbh, this is the first I’ve heard against taking phone calls in your own room…

(If it’s an hour long Skype session while I’m trying to study or sleep, though, I might ask them to take it to the common room/somewhere else. But from my memory, I’d have ~30 min phone calls with my then-girlfriend and he’d have 30 min-hour calls with his and neither one of us minded/cared; we just put in headphones and turned on some music.)

I think that once a day at first is fine (provided it’s not cutting into you socializing, going to class, etc.), but you should tone it down when you’re comfortable. I think once a week is a good “settled in” amount, along with texts and such with everyday stuff. I did about once a week for a decent portion of freshman year, before I ended up doing about every other week, and that’s about what I’ve been doing for the past year and a half.
