how much is too much

how much money is normal to spend on the college process? between sending scores (RUSH=31$), application fees, sending CSS profile for $18, stamps, envelopes and every other damn thing I spent $117 and only applied so far to two colleges…and one of the application fees were free!!! Is it just me or do colleges, collegeboard (all the money I spent to take SATs,SAT IIs, and all the books I bought to prep), and every other expense needed to apply make college admissions pretty tough on parents and students? Some schools want as much as 60 bucks for an application geez!

Remember, fee waivers are available for application fees and test fees for low income students. State universities typically have low application fees.

Seems that several years ago, I spent at least $500 on S's applications, not including plane fare for him to visit a college.

actually, university of connecticut wanted $75.

75 for a safety :( BLAH.

Eh, between fees, visits, tests, test prep and everything else, my parents have plunked down probably close to $1000, and they have a limit of being within 4 hours of home! I couldn't imagine what it would cost if we had to take a plane somewhere! The cost of this is incredible, and we haven't even paid a single bit of tuition yet! But at the same time, you need to think of it as if you were choosing a place to live for the next 4 years, you really need to do it carefully and be sure, and it's probably worth spending a bit of money to do it right.
