how much most people spend on laptop?

i got used fujitsu p1510d

8.9" inch and weighs less than 2 pounds

It weighs more than 2 pounds. :) Great table PC, but most people won't need it for UCLA's undergraduate purposes.

8.9"? too small IMO. personally the smallest i would go is 14.1" screen. preferably a 15.4". but that's because for the most part my laptop stays in my room.

yep I got the same one as you zero86, quite a nice laptop, definately enjoying the watching tv+surfing internet at the same time, since I have another tv in my room I watch 2 channels at once to avoid commercials lol

I am planning on getting a hp dv6500t or dv6000t. How important is battery life @ UCLA? How available are outlets throughout the campus? the dv6500 or dv6000 come with 6 cells, 6 cell high capacity, or 12 cell battery options, the 12 cell is HUGE, it protrudes from the bottom of the laptop. How often do you guys at UCLA find that you are unable to access any outlets, and therefore have to use the battery?

Peace

the reason why i bought 8.9" is that i already own a desktop,
since i frequently travel to korea i needed light, submachine computer.

oh yeah, the laptopo without the battery weighs less than 2 pounds
with battery weighs about 2.5?

i mean its a nice tablet, but its specifications are too outdated i think..haha

if you just need a laptop since you need a COMPUTER, go for it
if you are a gamer or whatever the reason, just buy a desktop which suites you

my dell cost 1200 including insurance, printer, word

yeah, and you can overclock desktops too and overclock the graphics+cpu.

I wish I had the kind of time you guys have...

Don't spend that $2000+ on the MacBook Pros, unless you're filthy rich. Not worth all that money.

[/quote]

Unless you're me...:p

$1500

Bought a Sager 5720-C. It's a tad outdated but still good

Just some general specs about the laptop:

Pentium M 740 1.73 Ghz
1GB RAM (1 x 1024)
80GB HD SATA (5400rpm)
Nvidia GeForce 7800 GTX Go 256mb

only thing is it's 17" which is a tad big but it's a desktop replacement laptop

Are there a lot of advantages in having a laptop?

I spent $600 on a semi-used (as good as new) Sony... it serves well for all practical purposes. Even games (though I'm not much of a gamer).

i spent.. 1400 on a lenovo IBM t60 2.0 ghz Core Duo with 1 Gig of RAM and a half decent graphics card.

university computers (associated with Boston University) has some decent deals on laptops, much better than UCLA store's pricing if you're gonna go through that avenue.

Is there a significant benefit to getting Vista Ultimate over Vista Home Premium?

Not at all, so just stick to Vista Home Premium

for most users, no not really. i think it just adds the extra security features from vista business and a few ultimate-exclusive programs. check microsoft's website....the difference between the versions are clearly laid out, and you can decide for yourself if those extra features are worth your money.

just download it hahaha
