How Much of a Reach is Michigan for Me?

Hey all,

I just visited Michigan this past week and I'm trying to figure out how much explaining I am going to have to do on the essay. I'm looking for ways to improve my chances.

General info:
-OOS (PA)
-Rising Senior
-Cumulative GPA: 3.4; Freshman GPA:3.0; Sophomore GPA:3.4; Junior GPA:3.7
-SAT I - 2080 (740CR, 700M, 640W)
-No ACTs or SAT IIs yet.
-My school doesn't rank.

Course load:
-4 honors courses, but only Econ and Physics B in the AP category so far.
-The majority of the courses I have taken are a grade level up, but not necessarily APs.
-4 APs next year (Enviro, Comp Sci, English, Gov't) and regular calc.

ECs:
-Policy Debate since freshman year. I am pretty involved in this, so it takes up most of my time during the school year.
-Engineering club. We have done things things like configuring the HVAC system at our school in order to keep heating+cooling within the school's budget.
-Tutoring at an inner city school once a week.
-I work 30-40 hours a week in the summer.

Thanks.

Your GPA is low but your SAT is ok. Michigan is a reach, but your grades have steadily improved, so you have a chance.

probably a match. michigan accepts 50% of all applicants.

I cannot argue with that. Actually, Michigan accepted 51% this year. But since the OP is OOS, I still think Michigan is a reach.

Too bad Michigan joined the Common App this year. It’s going to drop the OP’s chances much lower.

Actually, I do not think Michigan will have too much of an increase in applications this year. But next year and the year after will be very hectic indeed.
