How much "play money" do you think you need for college

how much money do you think you need to last you a school year.. this includes like food, clothes, and everything else.. like how much like pocket money do you think is good

very short answer;this TOTALLY depend on where you are going to school....city, rural, suburban, NY v kansas? private v public? should i go on?

yeah what do you think would be good for city, private
and what do you think of suburban private
northeast

I agree with rodney, and in addition I think it depends on the student and their unique resources. An 18-22 year-old could probably manage to spend ANY amount if it was available, and resourceful students without those resources could find a way to manage on $25 bucks a month.

There is no one answer to your question.

$99999999999999999999/day.

actually probably more like $100/week..if there's extra then just save it

i'm at a boarding school right now (on a college campus, fwiw), and I usually have around 40 bucks a month and i typically don't spend it. it's in a rural town though w/ little to do. i think i could manage on 50 bucks a month in a city like chicago and be happy.

"Play money" as in money not spent on necessary items like barbers, paper, ink cartridges,..?
- Depends on how much you go out. You can live comfortably on 25$ a week if you just buy extra food, the occasional newspaper, whatever - but if you want to go out there are really no limits.

how much would you all recommend for a semi-busy location? I'm thinking Houston, Dallas, Cleveland, Philly, etc.. moderately big city.

I probably want to buy food to prepare by myself (salad, ham sandwiches, fresh fruits, pasta) about 1-2 times a week and eat out maybe 4 times a week?
I'll use the library most of the time if I need a good book to read. Maybe 1 PC game a month. And the necessities (toothpaste, toothbrush, paper, pen and whatever you can think of)

Depends on what you want to do. If you go partying or clubbing at all, or use public transportation- that's a ton of money right there, and that's not even touching food or ink cartridges, etc...

Everyone is right, it's drastically different for each student. However, you should keep a very conservative budget when in college. Don't buy excessive things. If you can do without an ipod or video games I would not buy them. Always favor activities that are free or cheap like school sporting events are typically worth the money- going to a bar and spending $5/drink is not. Instead, buy a handle of something for $20 and keep that for a month (if alcohol is allowed in the dorms).

Always stay cognizant of your spending. If you hold a part time job and you only make $700/mo then spending $50-70 is reasonable.

For me, I really avoid spending any kind of money because I have little of it. I try to make dates that involve eating in, watching movies, or any other $1 activity.

The biggest thing to watch out for is fast food or any other small, cheap item that you can buy frequently. They'll easily add up into the hundreds.

Don't go past 50% on your credit card. You'll start developing bad credit.

no.

I would say $75-100 is a good estimate for most. This is if you're going out, have a car, eat out on the weekends, go to movies, etc., but don't do that stuff every night. Like tonight I went to dinner and then to the movies, so I spent about $25 in all. This money is beyond what I spend on my meal plan though.

I budgeted for about $50/week originally. I don't spend anywhere /near/ that much per month, but I have a meal plan and eat out about once a week. When I see movies, they're usually DVDs owned by friends, so that's free (and something we spend a lot of time doing).

So, y'know. I splurge occasionally on a book or two, but that's about it. I think my mean came to something like $20/week, to be honest. I spend less than my sister who is still in high school!

Well I spend around 100 dollars a week.. this includes food though and other necessities. My groceries come out to like 20-30 dollars a week? rest is like other food items/ shopping. I shop when I'm stressed out so lol ^^;; I make around 160-200 every 2 weeks so I never ge anything saved.

I would definitely recommend $500 a month if you're frugal. Getting a part-time job helps too.

what do you think of working and saving up during the summertime and beforehand and make enough money to last you the school year.. how much do you think a "good" amount is (for food daily, groceries, other necessities, movies, going out, and whatnot)

it really really depends on you as a student... obviously you can never have too much. I saved a LOT over the summer and have gone through all of it, but that's because I like to go out with friends, etc.
