I'm currently a junior and I was thinking about taking the SAT some time around December/ January (first try). But I'm conflicted about how much preparation should I be doing for the first take. I haven't had much time this summer to focus on that, unfortunately, but I'm hoping I can squeeze an hour or so every once in a while until I'm ready.

My main concern is exhausting all the resources and then ending with a mediocre score that I'm not happy with, which leaves me with very little (in terms of resources) to work with for other takes. (Usually, I tend to freeze or panic when I take something for the first time, which is why I'm a little edgy.) I was thinking about taking the SAT with minimal prep at first, but I don't know if that's a good idea, but I'm worried about the possibility of screwing up the first time.

How prep did you guys do for the first time? How much is advisable?

Thanks

It doesn’t really matter what other people do. Everyone is different. It sounds like to me that you would benefit from taking timed practice tests at home before your first sitting. You should prepare and study if you want/ need good scores. You should start with Silverturtle’s prep guide which is stickied in this section on CC.

i prepared 3 months from pre-intermediate level and my current score is 1650.

My first SAT was taken through the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth in 7th grade. I got around a 1600 with no prep. I also took the PSAT in 10th grade with no prep and got a 185. For your first SAT, I suggest skimming through some study guides (such as the official College Board one) and taking a few practice tests around October/November so you get a feel for the exam. I’m also taking my first [real and for college] SAT in December, and I’m definitely going to be taking timed practice tests during my free time leading up to that. Honestly, do whatever you think will be helpful.
