How Much Sleep do YOU Get at College?

According to The Boston Globe, some college officials are addressing their concerns about student sleeping (or lack thereof). See: Colleges calling sleep a success prerequisite - The Boston Globe

When I was in college, post-midnight bedtimes were common, and all-nighters frequent during finals, but I think that today's students add extra hours to their days and are far more sleep-deprived than we ever were due to all the electronic "conveniences" that didn't exist four decades ago.

When I was in college, I guess it really was the dark ages, because there wasn't nearly as much we could do after dark. ;) Do current students feel that they might actually sleep more if they weren't watching TV or movies in their dorm rooms, playing video games, texting and IM'ing friends, burning free minutes on long cell calls, etc.? Is it really school work and extracurriculars that keep students awake or is it often the temptations of modern technology?

I think there's some of all of it. I do believe the video games, phones, TVs, etc plays a large part even if you don't use them at night. Having them available makes it pretty easy to push off homework assignments and having the convenience of the "drop box" where you can turn assignments in online also does not help in that regard. Most professors allow an assignment to be due at 11:59PM rather than in class.

There is definitely the homework part and I know some people spend LONG hours in the library and in their rooms studying. Some people, I think, spend too much time doing so that it actually hurts them.

Another large aspect to be recalled is the amount of partying that goes on. I seriously think there are some people who go out and party EVERY night. I had a roommate last fall that he went out probably 4-5 nights a week. He'd come in around 2:30-3 or later and was up at 7:45 for class the next morning.

My laptop keeps me up when I really get into it. xD Though I never stay up past 12:30 AM. I usually go to bed early and so do my roomates. Then we wake up at around seven or eight to get in a good breakfast.

I usually get 5-7 hours of sleep per night (going to bed around 3-5am, waking up around 10-10:30). Without technology I'd technically get to bed earlier because I'd have nothing to do when I come home from work at 10:30 but work on my psets, but that would also be a pretty dismal existence.

4 last night, probably 0 tonight. Combo of phone/computer/partying/entertaining friends.

yeah, i probably get about 6-7 hours on a regular night or 3-5 hours on a going out/partying/hella homework night

i procrastinate a lot though, and like Nickel Xenon, my laptop can keep me awake because i'm pointlessly surfing the net or something

I never go to bed before 3 am, meaning I get 5-6 hours/weeknight. Probably not a good thing.

My average is around 4-5 nightly due to friends/procrastination/studying. I always wake up after that. My friends and I just have sleep issues, I think. But, when I have the chance, I get the golden eight hours. And normally 2-3 if I go out on a weeknight. Or.. 6, if lucky, on a weekend.

I took Stanford's famous Sleep and Dreams course last winter, and discovered to my great surprise that I consistently averaged under six hours a night. Some weeks I pushed 6, but never quite managed to get above that mark for the week.

i get between 5-8 hours of sleep. when i have my 8AM class, i get around 5-6. when i have my 11AM class, i get 7-8. and im only an entering freshman.

I've been getting 7-9 on weeknights which is really good for me, especially considering that in high school I usually got about 4-5 every night. It has really helped me out mentally and physically to be getting so much sleep and my grades have been up which is a big change from high school so I'm definitely going to try to keep this up.

8 hours minimum for me.

Pick classes that end early. I get up at 8:30, have class until 3 (average), go to lab for 2 hours, Get my work done in 3-4 hours, and chill back at the dorm for 4 hours.

Too much play, and I feel like I'm not doing anything productive.

Too much work, and I feel bored.

But too little sleep, I feel miserable no matter what I do.

The key is finding that balance.

Last night I went to sleep around 2:30 and got up this morning at 10 (for 11am class). So that is like 7.5 which is good for me. On the nights before I have my 9:30am class I usually go to bed earlier, like around 12:30 or 1 and get up at 8:30ish. So that is pretty much the same amount of sleep every night. If I go out on the weekends I stay up til 3 or 4 but then I'll sleep in til noon. I don't think I'm really missing out on alot of sleep. Sometimes there are late nights before tests, or working on papers/homework, but I usually try to start earlier in the night so that I'm finished no later than 1:30am. I like to get a good amount of sleep before a test, otherwise I make stupid mistakes from being so tired. I do stay up on my computer alot though too. Like last night I was watching youtube and listening to music til I went to bed, but I don't just mindlessly stay up til 4 watching youtube; I go to bed when I start getting really sleepy.

I don't get enough sleep at night (I've been to bed before 1AM maybe three times, and once was last night because I have a bad cold) but I take hardcore naps. I took a two hour nap earlier today and it was fabulous. Usually I only rest for about 20 minutes though and I feel great. Naps are where it's at!

Usually, it's about 6-8 hours (depending on whether my roommate wakes me up at 7 or not), but this week it's been about 4-5 every night due to tests and crazily huge homework load. I know I don't function well without sleep, so I generally try to do it more than other people. This week has been pushing it, honestly.

I do know a lot of people who don't sleep a lot during the night, but they make gaps in their schedule to take naps during the day to help make up for it. Crazy engineers.

My sleep schedule is hardly irregular; I usually get around 6-8 hours a night, and about 4-5 hours the night before midterm and finals.

average about 9-10 hours a night. What can I say, I love sleep.

Between zero and 16. Depends on my mood that day and any work that needs to be done. Weekdays lean towards the zero end of the spectrum while weekends lean towards the 16 end of the spectrum.

I usually go to sleep around 430am, and wake up at 930am. 5 hours is the norm for me since high school though.

I usually get 6 hours of sleep, around 2:30-8:30+. On days where I have 8:00 classes, it's 5, and sometimes I'll get 7 on a good day. I'll sometimes postpone HW or other work if I feel like I need sleep.
