How much stuff did you pack?

I'm looking at my list of things and it looks long on paper, but in reality I feel like I could fit most of these things in 2 luggage bags since the majority of the items are small like toiletries, supplies, etc. (I haven't started packing yet, this is just what I imagine). I feel like I'm underpacking and not bringing enough. Maybe I'm just being deceived by what the college movies portray, I don't know. College dorms already supply you with the essentials like a bed, dresser, closet, lamp, desk, and chair so I feel like I don't have to bring much.

How much stuff did you bring?

I have two 20 gallon totes filled with food and various other items, and a large dufflebag for all of my clothes / alcohol. I’m also bringing a mini-fridge, fan, and three-way lamp because the rooms are dark.

I have two suitcases of clothes, bedding and nice clothes in SpaceBags, a medium-sized toiletries bag, 3 or so carboard boxes of stuff, a clear tool/electronics box, some purses and backpacks, my trashcan, a carpet, a TV, a lamp, a dresser set, my alarm clock and a couple of stuffed animals.

It should all fit in my car (Nissan Versa). If I can’t make it work, my mom and dad will help me.

I packed a carfull my freshman year and it was wayyy too much. I think I could have fit everything into three suitcases (one would have had nothing but my blanket/pillow/towels) and a box for my printer.

Last year i brought, two duffel bags and two large plastic containers of clothes, shoes, ties, belts, along with a tv, a futon, wire shelving, and two book bags, one with my school stuff, the other with toiletries. I was able to fit it all in a back of a jeep

Wow, well I am a crazy over packer. And they say you learn to take less each year, not me. I am taking: 2 bed sets, microwave, tv, trunk of clothes, medium suitcase of clothes, 3 bins of mixed items, two duffels, printer, large box for mattress topper and I’m not sure what to carry my shoes in yet. I don’t know how to cut back. I don’t think it’s all going to fit in the van. I might have my brother follow in his car.

I start packing next week but from the looks of it it seems like 2 suitcases, and me mailing a box of stuff there. Big downgrade from last year which was like 2 suitcases, a backpack, a duffel bag, and some other shopping bags.

I have one Hefty bag each for shirts, pants, skirts/dresses, coats, and pajamas/underwear/socks. Then I have three big cardboard boxes with basically everything else- toiletries, school supplies, miscellaneous junk. Part of me feels like I have way too much, but worst case scenario my parents can just take the extra stuff home.

I’m bringing 2 duffel bags with clothes and towels, 1 smaller bag with books and clothes, 2 carry-ons with shoes and toiletries/various supplies, 1 backpack with school supplies, 1 plastic drawer with tableware and food, 2 tote bags with hangers, 2 purses filled with random small things (accessories, books, decorations, etc.), 1 shopping bag with textbooks, a mini-fridge, a pitcher, a desk lamp, a blanket, a pillow, 2 medium sized stuffed animals, a box of detergent, and I plan to put my electrical stuff (laptop, camera, etc.) in a messenger bag. I feel like I’m bringing a lot… but similar to rebeccar, if it is too much, I can just send it back with my parents.

I have one fairly large suitcase full of clothes, and another regular sized suitcase with things like towels and toiletries. My bedding and laundry detergent are in my laundry basket. School supplies mostly in my backpack (some extra things like pencil sharpener in the toiletries suitcase).

Haven’t packed books yet… It’s going to be tough to decide which to take. I’ll try to contain them to the extra spaces in the suitcases I already have.

Edit: No textbooks, as my school hasn’t even let us register for classes yet.

I have 1 large box with cloths, a lamp, printer. 1 small box with misc items. A duffle bag filled with cloths and misc. In a crate I have bedding, and I also have trash can filled with toilet, medicine, + cleaning supplies. And a laundry basket filled with stuff. I am also bringing my mini-fridge, although there is a big fridge in the suite…

Then I have to fit the rowing machine (which the school let me bring home) and a bike in the car as well.

I’m bringing one less box than I did last year, I believe.

Gotta agree with Pinkstuffz. You learn to pack a little less every year. Freshman year I brought a gym bag, a trunk, 1 normal sized luggage and one smaller luggage. Then I bought a mini fridge when I got up to school. This year i’m bringing only the normal sized lugga, the fridge and the gym bag. Luggage has the clothes, tolitries and a few books, while the hym bag has some toilet paper and basically everything else. I’m also bringing my bookbag of course, which has all my school supplies. (Pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, etc.)

Out of curiosity… If you bring your clothes in luggage where do you put the luggage when it’s empty?

In the dorms there’s 2 big closets and 2 drawers for me and my roommate. In the closet I hang the shirts up and then put my pants and socks into the drawers. My roommate last year just put his luggage under his bed. I did the same thing for a while, but in the Spring semester I just started putting it in my closet. The closets big enough that my luggage fits into it without a problem.

The trick with luggage is to get suitcases that fit inside each other so that either you can store it or your parents only have one suitcase to get home.

I have A loft bed and slide my trunk under there. I keep one duffel for weekend travel. Everything else goes back home until move out in the spring. Winter break I get the suitcase from home and pack it. But this works only because I live 1 1/2 hours away.

For the OP:
Not all colleges provide lamps and if so it is a desk lamp which won’t help if you plan to read in bed. Also while a closet is there, you will need hangers because those are not provided. Depending on the room configuration, you might need some kind of towel bar. You will most likely want a fan. Many rooms do not provide trash baskets. You will need bedding including a mattress cover. In addtion to basic toiletries, you need supplies you would normally have in your own house without thinking about-tissues, paper towels, laundy detergent, office supplies, thermometer, dust-buster, cleaning supplies and so much more.

^ Oh, don’t worry bookmama22  I already had alllll of that on my list of things haha

I brought a lot. Not going to lie. It was mostly clothes that took up space.

But my dorm has huge closets and a huge dresser, so it all fit fairly easily.

But I brought two large suitcases of clothes/accesories/shampoo/etc. A smaller suitcase with shoes and my computer. A couple of bookbags with textbooks, shoes, and towels. A laundry basket filled with plates, bowls, an alarm clock, and laundry stuff.

It barely fit in the back of my car, but it did and I don’t think it was really that much more than anyone else.
