I’m currently a rising senior in hs with generally really good grades. My overall UW gpa is a 3.92 & I have gotten A’s in all subjects except for a B+ & C+ in honors precalc & a b+ second trimester of honors chem sophomore year. I took calculus my junior year & got A’s both trimesters of it & had a 4.0 UW altogether junior & freshman year.
So I am wondering how much those grades will deter me from getting into colleges with low acceptance rates? (such as u of chicago, northwestern, berkeley etc.) I have also taken (including this upcoming year) 6 AP classes & 6 honors classes & got a 33 on my act. That C just makes me look really bad!! ugh it was also due to awful depresssion stemming from my father’s crazy alcoholism & emotionally abusive personality if that makes a difference to colleges.
I would think it over very carefully before I mention this to colleges, which it sounds like you are intending to do. Talk it over with your GC, too. Colleges look at the information you provide to assess your chances of success. Do you want them to wonder if you’ll face even more problems when in college? The C is not going to be the end of your hopes, but if they worry about whether you can make it thru that very well may be.
I would not be concerned about it. Looks like your just had a bad class/teacher, your subsequent calc grade is excellent, and your GPA is still good.
Also, a B+ in chem once is not a big deal either.

Most transcripts will only have the FINAL grade for each course (so mid-year “report card” grades will not appear, nor will your grade on a mid-term or final exam, for example). Ask your GC what appears on the transcript they send to colleges…you may find that these grades you are concerned about won’t even appear there.
