How much will an atrocious SAT II score hurt my chances?

Ok, so I just found out I got a 440 (8th percentile) on the Japanese SAT II. I knew I wouldn't do that well, but I at least thought I'd break 550. Anyway, this is my first SAT II (I'm a junior), and I only took it because I'm not going to be able to take Japanese next year (I'm in Japanese III right now, and it's distance learning). It's partly the fault that the Japanese class I take is distance learning, and partly the fault of me for not learning the material and cramming for tests (I still have had all A's in the class from Japanese I). I'm going to the Governor's School for Japanese this summer, so with that and some studying, I might be able to improve it next November (it's only offered in November), but I doubt by an extreme amount. I got a 1410 on the SAT in October, and am taking it again in December. I'm ranked number one in my school, have a few college courses at UVA under my belt, and my ec's are not good. I plan to get at least 700+ in all my other SAT II's, and I was planning to major in Japanese, and I still want to, but since this score is pretty damn bad I don't know how colleges will look on it.

Will this kill my chances at

UVA (In-state)
Middlebury
Georgetown
Cornell
University of Chicago

Thanks, and man my score sucks, lol.

You'll want to write them a letter explaining how/why you scored so poorly. Also, make sure to have three other solid SAT II scores.

You took it pretty early. Go to governor's school, buy a prep book and you'll do great next November.

Sadly, there are no prep books in print as of now. I really am not sure how much better I'd do, and for that matter, whether I'd want to take the test again. But if I send them the letter explaining the distance learning stuff and everything, how much will this hurt my chances?

1st, why did you take the test if you dont speak Japenese (which it doesnt look like you do)?
2nd, id write i side note on my app saying something like i ran to the bathroom to throw up during the test and didnt cancel scores because then it would cancel the other SAT2's that I had alreay taken that day.

will they even buy a side note like that? cause couldn't anybody just use that to justify their low score? although, you do have a chance to improve frs, so you shouldn't beworried.

I took the test even though I'm not Japanese because I've taken 2 years of Japanese and that is my prospective major.

I know I have a chance to improve, but it's really not a big one. I appreciate your responses of support, but could someone give me a cold hard estimation of the damage this has caused me?

yea i know i posted this on another thread but i want an answer:

as long as we are talking about atrocious SAT II scores, heres a questionL will one really bad satii score hurt you?

I got 790 math, 740 writing, 750 latin, 720 us history, and a 1550 on my SAT but i got a 660 on bio... and that was the second time i took it too! first time i got a 620 on bio...damn i got an A in AP bio too...

anyway how bad does 1 hurt your chance?

azneverfrost- It shouldn't hurt you at all, since you have 3 other scores that are higher. Colleges will see the Bio grade, but I doubt they'll pay much attention to it. If that was the 3rd score it could hurt, but in this case it shouldn't matter.

What about 800 writing, 800 US History and 660 Lit/ 650 Spanish, with a 1580 SAT I. Those are the four SAT II scores I have, and I'm a little unsettled. I don't think it's that bad of a situation, is it?

Wait, so If I have three good other SATII's, colleges won't care about the Japanese SATII?

Exactly, frs.

Have 3 other good scores so this one won't hurt you. Also, take it agian next year after you've taken more Japanese.

even so...im sure they still consider more than 3...like some schools say they only count your highest SAT math and verbal and your 3 highest SAT II scores...but they probably will reject you if you get like 730 740 780 630 620 550 wont they

The Japanese SAT II is weighted more heavily than most SAT's because the majority of the people who take it have some sort of fluency in Japanese (be it by birth or circumstance). Most students who study Japanese usually do poorly on this exam because of that curve. I say this because I have been studying Japanese for a while now and I thought the test was very simple (only I didn't do so well comparitvely). My other psuedo-Japanese friends also did not do so well because of this. That said I only found this out because of my results...I don't know how colleges react to this stuff...

440 is a bad score definatly write something explaining why that happened. If you have 3 other strong ones though they probably will just let it go and assume that you just had a very bad day.

What about 540 on writing?
Would they just reject me without even looking at my essays, transcript, etc?
I'm a non-native English speaker(been in America for 3.5 years)
but, still...Isn't 540 too low?? Do I have to explain what happened?
