Here are my scores from November:
Verbal: 93 (752)
Math: 91 (761)
Reading: 82 (701)
Overall: 92 (Total: 2214)

Here are my scores from December:
Verbal: 99 (794)
Math: 86 (743)
Reading: 86 (710)
Overall: 95 (Total: 2247)

As you can see, this is a bit of a peculiar case. How badly will this affect me for Andover and Exeter? (I'm applying for FA) I have strong ECs/Essays/Interviews. Does this make my chances almost nonexistent or am I still in the running?

yeah, now that i’ve thought about it, 91 --> 86 is such a drastic drop in score that i don’t think you should bother applying to any bs at all.

@tramtpm I submitted both to the schools I’m applying to. You can choose which scores you want to send but the school will still see that you have multiple scores on file.

@fluffymilk - Why in the world are you applying to only two schools if you need full FA? Why would someone ( with your stats and enthusiasm ) buy only two lottery tickets? Look- your stats look fine but why would you willingly throw yourself into the two most competitive pools (for FA) on earth if attending BS (and getting a world class education) is your dream or goal?

I don’t care if the AOs (at both schools) dipped and kissed you during your interviews. If you want to go to BS- you need to apply to more schools. A & E aren’t the only games in town when it comes to generous FA ( and a fine education ). I suggest you try to interview with more schools via Skype before the deadline. Checkout other school websites to see when they’re back from break and schedule some more interviews … OR roll the dice on two applications and second guess everything until M10. It’s your choice.

@fluffymilk Seriously. If you need full FA, apply to more schools in more tiers. If you read enough posts on this board, you will see the stories of others in your situation. I don’t want to see you disappointed on M10, but limiting your application to just 2-3 schools is a risky strategy.

@london203 and @PhotographerMom She might have a good local backup and wants, if she were to go to boarding school, nothing less than the prestige of E&A. Which would be a perfectly fine reason for casting a small net.

@MBVLoveless Thank you for understanding. (I don’t need full FA btw, I only need about half.) My local school is actually quite good for what it is, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I had to go there. I know someone that got accepted into Andover and then still decided to go to my local school so he could pursue his more rigorous ECs. My goal isn’t to just attend any private BS. I picked E&A for a reason.

I have the same circumstance as @fluffymilk, and my local high school is very good in its own right. However, one of the reasons why I am applying to one school only is because I just want to get a little bit of experience regarding the application process, and to see where I stand among all the other extremely gifted kids in the world, not just in my school district. Getting in would be a huge and welcomed bonus, though, as fluffymilk said, it’s not the end of the world.

@Fluffymilk - I based my comment on a post (from a café thread- 12/20/14) . You wrote:

" I’m currently at a public school. Even though it is considered great for a public school and a lot of the kids that go to my school have the money/ECs to attend a private school, they don’t have the smarts. Most of the teachers don’t have any passion for teaching and their classes are quite boring.

The one class that I believe needs a good teacher (math) is the worst class for me this year. My teacher just can’t teach math. I’m in an accelerated math group, but the teacher rarely teaches well and he rarely collects the homework. We spend entire classes sometimes just going over the homework that we did the previous night.

I detest the learning environment there and how most kids say that they hate reading and learning and all that. Just because I’m smart, I get bogged down with people asking me for answers constantly and it got to the point where helping them hindered my own schoolwork so I had to be a bit mean about it.

Although it wouldn’t be the worst thing to go to my local public high school next year, it is definitely the last resort. I mentioned this quite a bit to my interviewers and they seemed to sympathize and they said that this is a very common story that they hear. I think it’s sad how people don’t take education seriously. I laugh at the kids at my school who say that they want to go to Harvard when they clearly have no idea what it takes.

Good luck and happiness to everyone that’s applying this year to anywhere, whether it be a prep school, academic program, or college! "

AND - from a thread you started on Chances (12/10/14) You wrote: " Also hoping for full FA or close to full FA, which I know will decrease my chances by a lot."

Andover and Exeter are Reach schools for everyone. You might not get in. If you go to the trouble of applying to two schools, at least throw in a few more that can be considered top 10, such as St. Paul’s, Middlesex, and Choate.

OP’s original question asked for opinions in re: application to PA and PEA only and again in #9. In that context, the scores are wholly adequate.

OP’s exclusive focus on schools with @ 10% admit rates is a wholly different subject. Personally, I always wonder why applicants insist on lumping PA and PEA together. Save for origins, size and prestige, they are hugely different - academics, culture, overall tone. The more you know about them, the more you tend to favor one over the other. But to each his/her own…
