I’m a rising junior who is thinking of learning how to code. Once I develop a good amount of knowledge, I want to make an app or two before applying to college time. How popular would the app need to be for colleges to consider it to be something worthwhile. I’m going to try to add this to my extracurriculars since all I have right now is that I’m on the board for my school’s biggest club.

Second, is that even going to help me a lot. I see all these ECs about starting non-profits and revolutionizing the world that Im starting to worry. Help anyone?

Haha the people who revolutionize the world often started out very small, but poured in energy and time not for the sake of college, because what they did genuinely mattered to them.

I know someone who got into a Top Tier by just having one extracurricular: Learning Russian. No awards, nothing. But, in her essays, she probably demonstrated her love of Russian.

Thanks for the advice! I should stop worrying. May I ask what college or major the person you are referring to is in/studying?

Building apps have been done before – an admit to Stanford this year (I believe) created an app that makes speaking/hearing easier for patients of a certain illness.

But that is to the extreme and rare, so if you have passion for coding, by all means go ahead.

I believe it was an Ivy, probably Harvard but I can’t remember exactly. Sorry I do not know what her major was.

Do it b/c you are interested in it: unless you hit the invention lottery, it won’t help much on it’s own.

Colleges see a ton of these- and are pretty good are figuring out which ones are purely for show and which ones show some actual commitment/achievement.
