hey everyone. i have to sign up for second semester classes right now. how much would it hurt my chances if i took business math instead of pre-cal?? i realllly don't want to take pre-cal and already took two honors math courses before (honors geometry - a, honors alg ii - b). everything else on my app checks out for me (2140 sat, 3.85 uw gpa, 5 ap classes + many more honors, passionate ec's, really good recs, etc). please let me know what you guys think. oh, and my major is screenwriting (1st choice) and english (2nd choice). thanks!

Well, your majors aren’t very math heavy, luckily. At least you’re not going for, say, engineering. It shouldn’t be too damaging, if it damages it at all.

Are you a senior? I’m fairly certain that class selection second semester of senior year really can’t hurt or help you.

That said, as of now you haven’t entered any higher level math courses. This could look bad. I think most qualified applicants would be taking Pre-Calc or higher in their senior year.

This leads me to believe you may not be a senior, in which case I think you definitely should continue with Pre-Cal. If you stop taking rigorous math courses halfway through high school, USC will notice that.

yeah im already a senior. i took honors geom freshman year and honors alg ii sophomore and then didn’t take math junior year. but i’ve heard some people even get in with no ap classes and many get in with sat’s below 2000 so i would think someone like me would be ok…i mean, some people with lower objective stats than me have been invited for the trustee and pres scholarships!, so if i was rejected completely…it’d be very strange, imo. i also have taken advanced english classes that no one else in my respective grades have taken so that might offset the lack of rigor in math? i dunno…the thing is that i doubt i could even get a c in precal if i took it, and if i got a d, i wouldn’t even be able to attend a uc school. :-/

heh. i guess i just answered my own question…i should probably take the class i’ll actually do well in, so that’s what i’ll do. any other info about how it could impact or not impact my chances would be appreciated anyway, though, just so i can prepare myself.

Well, it is true that you haven’t taken any of the higher math classes… but my point was that I don’t know how much you’ll need it as a screenwriting/english major.
