I'm wondering how much money one could make in summer holiday at Carleton. I'm an international student and don't know the minimum wage there as well as how long one with F1 visa type could work during summer. Your insides are appreciated.

Are you talking about working at Carleton, or somewhere off campus?

About working on campus, as far as I know an F1 visa holder can not work off campus, right?

Sorry, a word in the last sentence was misspelled: "insights" not "insides".

My daughter worked on campus last summer (just continued doing her work-study), and I think the pay rate was $9.24 per hour. Housing is available fairly inexpensively on campus, but she chose to share a place off-campus. There are usually a good number of students doing various jobs over the summer, so you won't get lonely.

Thanks fireflyscout. And I would like to ask how much the housing and food would cost in Minnesota in the summer, given that I could share a place off-campus with someone. I am thinking of how much I could contribute towards my education.

D lived in an 2-bedroom apartment above a storefront on Division St. for a year. $900/mo. split three ways. Food was about $150/mo. (included eating out occasionally). They paid for heat/electric, but not water. I don't recall her budget for utilities. She was employed by Carleton during the summer at the work-study rate.
Also, consider working during Winter Break. 6 weeks from before Thanksgiving until New Years.

If I recall correctly, on-campus housing is $50 per week during summer. D shared a house with two others, her share was $250 per month, I think.

For summer subletters, expect to pay $200-$300 a month for your share of rent. It's a little more than the college-owned housing for the summer, but well worth it for the possibility of AC in the unbearably hot weeks. Not sure about winter break, but so few people want to stay that I imagine you could pay even less for rent than over the summer. Cost of groceries is as much as you want it to be, but $30-40 a week is a good amount to budget. Break pay rate was $9.24/hour for the past few years, but could go up.

Thanks all. Now I have had a general idea about making money in vacations. That would help me a lot in my plan.
