I was looking at the "what to bring" list and one of the items is a dorm fridge. I would like to ask current residents if most people have fridges and how necessary they are.

You can rent a fridge from NU if you want. They even offer a fridge/microwave combination. Just in case you’re interested.

I thought microwaves were banned from residence halls.

You’re right, I must have been thinking of DePaul University since I was looking at them awhile back. Good thing you caught that. You can’t even have a coffee maker :-/. Damn I was banking on not having to pay for coffee everyday.

microwaves are not permitted in dorms but they do make some fridge/microwave combo available for renting, you can buy it too… You can only get it from that one ‘approved’ company…like many other universities…

Reason:
“The approved Micro-Fridge option comes with a safe-plug mechanism that assist the wattage for the number of residents using them and prevents circuit overloads.”

So also, no other microwave allowed except the one from this company : Microfridge
(though you can get a fridge from another company but they recommend that you use their approved vendor, which also makes sense… you don’t want lights going off all the time now do you??)
and remember that the fridge cannot be more than 5 cu.ft.
you can look it up through northeastern’s vendors’ list.

and also to answer the op’s question:

a fridge and microwave can be very useful especially during exams when some people do not wish to go to dining halls and also when your late for your lunch/dinner; then you can swipe it against take outs, buy some groceries/pop corn etc. and can store/heat/cook using your fridge and microwave…I would certainly recommend renting or buying it…

Aha, I guess I wasn’t confusing the two schools then. Definitely a worthwhile investment; remember that you are going to be living in your dorm, so at least a fridge would be highly convenient. A fridge means cold drinks and snack food for any time that you’re just hanging out in your dorm. Sounds good to me.

OK, so I Googled Northeastern Microfridge and found the link to the company that rents them. They are $207.19 per year. I think I can buy a brand new one for less than that and a used one for a fraction of that.

A fridge only, not the combo.

Yes, you can definitely buy a fridge for less than $207.19, especially if the fridge is smaller than 5 cubic feet. I think you can definitely get away without the microwave, but you would probably regret not having a fridge. After reading this, I personally now plan to buy a 4.5 cubic ft. fridge to bring with me. There are 4.5 cubic ft. refrigerators for sale at home depot for $160.

The only thing I’d like to point out about having a small fridge is that once you move into an apartment/upperclassmen suite with a kitchen- it’s pretty much useless. Unless you are a little strange and somehow need the extra space…

Many people at that point sell their used dorm fridge to freshmen on move in day .

When my son was a freshman, we rented the fridge/micro combo. We split the cost with his roommate. The unit was delivered before his move-in day. It worked well all year. We didn’t regret the decision.

He didn’t need one this year, as he’s in West Village C with a kitchen.

Did he use the microwave much? Would a fridge have been sufficient?

I don’t think my son would have missed the microwave at all, but his roommate was big into popcorn (quick, easy, cheap snack) so he used it a LOT.
