How would I go about submitting a letter from someone not affiliated with my school?

Have your boss send the letter directly to the college. Snail mail.

Okay. Do I have to indicate anything on the common app that says that I’m sending it by mail?

I don’t know whether there is any place to note something like that. You could call the admissions office.

Noooo, snail mail = fail. Add it under the Additional Information section of the CA.

Adding it to the CA would require the boss to access the CA would it not? Or would the applicant have a copy of the letter and paste it in? That would not maintain confidentiality of the the letter. At my daughter’s school, they had a hard copy of the letter from anyone outside the school and it went with the transcript and other letters. Everything is changing so fast including how much is submitted online. If the boss is older, it is not fair to expect him/her to submit on-line.

Ask your school to send it along with your transcripts, teacher recs, etc That’s what I did.

My D attached a reference letter from an employer in the Add’l Information section. I don’t see how it would violate the CA confidentiality agreement for teacher/counselor recs. There was no way to ask the employer (from an internship) to mail it to 9 or 10 schools, it could not be sent with school information and it would be odd for my D to mail a copy of it to schools. The letter was specific to what she plans on studying in college and was important to her application. She did not attach a resume since I think you can only upload one doc in the Add’l Info section.
