so my parents have kind of overrided my hopes of attending a bs, basically the deal is that I visited one of the exeter orientations, and they thought it seemed to much like a college "open house", and deemed it as nothing special and are now convinced that attending bs is not an option. I think its more of a case that my parents really want to see me during my hs years, and that the whole "nothing special" thing was just their way of saying it less bluntly.

Can someone help create a list of things to convince them to atleast let me apply to bs.

Well, have you ever considered being a day student? all the great things of bs: academics, offerings, and everything else AND you live at home? I dont know your case but just a suggestion

Are your parents saying college is nothing special? You eventually need to go to one. Also, there are BSs that are smaller like Hotchkiss, St. Andrews, and Middlesex.

bs costs a ton of money … so you need to being able to describe what about the bs experience would be better than your local hs and why it is worth spending the extra bucks. We know nothing about your families finances … depending on how set your parents are for sending kids to college and for retirement the added cost of bs may be a show stopper. (PS - for my parents my not living at home was a show stopper)

@Frogeyedpeas: I offer you the following from a parent’s perspective.

In general, I think parents want only the best for their kids and make choices based on this POV. Have you ever considered that maybe BS isn’t the right choice for you? As siliconvalleymom and 3togo mention above, we know nothing about your family’s situation — financial or otherwise…so it’s hard for me to tell you something to cross your parents. I would never advocate for that, especially not knowing your complete situation. I will add that fighting your parents on this issue may lead to lingering dissent between you and them…another thing I would never wish on any family.

Additionally, I sometimes get the feeling here at the CC Prep Admissions forum that some kids feel that they MUST attend a BS. This despite the fact that lots of people who have perhaps never even considered BS have gone on to great colleges/careers/happy healthy lives. In some cases where there are no options to support a child’s potential/drive or where the commute to a more local becomes an issue, I could see the imperative to go to BS going up…but I’m sure Harvard has its share of kids from rural Iowa who were at the top of their public high school class.

That said, here’s what I would say to them. “Exeter is just one school. Let’s look at 2 others…maybe even in person/on campus…if they both rub you the same way, then we’ll call this boarding school thing off. At least then I will feel like we explored the BS option.” Something like that.
